How 'Professional' Advice Almost Ruined My Health (And Made Me Create D-Fit)
The story of how I went from athlete to 'muscular but breathless' following bad advice - and why it motivated me to create a solution that empowers people to make their own decisions.
I’m going to tell you a story few people know - and it was one of the main reasons I created D-Fit.
The Athlete Who Became “Strong Without Breath”
A few years ago, I had a body I’d now classify as “almost athletic”. It wasn’t perfect, but I had energy, vitality to do anything during the day, climb stairs without thinking twice.
Then I met a nutritionist.
“Cardio is a waste of time,” he said.
“It only catabolizes muscle.”
“Runners just destroy their knees for nothing.”
“Focus on anaerobic and you’ll get real results.”
And you know what’s worse? I loved hearing that.
I always hated treadmills. That shit of running without going anywhere got on my nerves. So when a “professional” validated my laziness?
I accepted it immediately.
The Result? A Complete Disaster
Fast forward 2 years:
- Muscles? Yes, bigger
- Strength? Increased significantly
- Shape? Fat with muscle underneath
- Energy? Zero
- Vitality? None
- Fat? WAY more than before
- Cardio? Like a sedentary elderly person
I had become that guy: strong, fat, and completely without energy to live.
I’d climb one flight of stairs and be gasping. A longer walk was already a challenge. By 3 PM I was dead tired.
But hey, at least my bench press had increased, right? 🙄
The Penny That Dropped
It was when I started understanding mitochondria and energy metabolism that the penny dropped on the stupidity I’d done.
Cardio isn’t about “burning calories”. It’s about:
- Mitochondrial density (literally your cellular energy plants)
- Metabolic efficiency
- Oxidative capacity
- Cardiovascular health
- Cognitive function
- Longevity
Basically, by completely eliminating cardio, I had destroyed my ability to produce energy efficiently.
It was like having a car with a V8 engine but a VW Beetle’s fuel system.
The Work Impact (That Nobody Talks About)
And here’s the part nobody tells you:
My work productivity went to shit.
- Focus? Lasted 30 minutes max
- Creativity? Zero, brain in zombie mode
- Long meetings? Mental torture
- Reasoning? Slow as dial-up
- Decisions? Infinite procrastination
You know that “brain fog” feeling? It was my default state.
The brain needs oxygen and efficient energy. When your mitochondria are screwed from lack of aerobic conditioning, your brain suffers as much as (or more than) your muscles.
Result?
I had muscles to impress on Instagram but no mental energy to perform at work.
Basically became a cutting-edge processor running in power-saving mode all the time.
The Bigger Problem: Dependence on “Gurus”
But you know what the worst part of this whole story was?
I had completely outsourced my health decisions.
- Didn’t question
- Didn’t research
- Didn’t validate
- Simply accepted because it was convenient
And this happens to THOUSANDS of people every day.
They depend on:
- Nutritionists who generalize
- Personal trainers with bias
- Influencers without knowledge
- Fad diets
Without ever truly understanding what they’re doing to their own body.
Why I Created D-Fit
That’s exactly why I built D-Fit.
Not to be another app telling you what to do.
But to be a tool that empowers you with:
- Real knowledge about your metabolism
- Precise data about your needs
- Flexibility for your choices
- Education to make informed decisions
The idea was never to replace professionals. It was to give you the power to:
- Question recommendations
- Validate if they make sense for YOUR body
- Adjust based on real results
- Understand the why behind each choice
The Lesson I Learned
Today, with the knowledge I have, my training is completely different:
- 3x strength per week (yes, still important)
- 2x moderate/intense cardio
- Daily walks
- Mobility always
Result?
At 30+ years old I have more energy than at 20. Muscles? Still have them. But now with energy to actually USE them in life.
Your Body, Your Rules, Your Responsibility
If there’s one thing I want you to take from this text:
Nobody knows your body better than you.
Are professionals important? Yes.
But they’re consultants, not dictators.
Question. Research. Test. Validate.
And most importantly: take control.
That’s why D-Fit exists. To give you the necessary tools to make informed decisions about your own health and fitness.
No dogmas. No bias. No bullshit.
Just you, your data, and the knowledge to make the best choices.
PS: And yes, cardio is super important. Don’t be the idiot I was.
